Art from the Heartland 2026

Churchman-Fehsenfeld Gallery, Sarah M. Hurt Gallery + Basile Gallery

Juried by Kolt Lucius Sizer, Curator of Education and Public Programming at the South Bend Museum of Art.

The Midwest is fruitful soil for creatives of all ambitions. Art From the Heartland stitches together a disparate patchwork of artists whose work spans a wide array of traditional practices and materials.

Many artworks on display tap into more than one of these themes, and dozens of other  thematic threads can be followed throughout the galleries. No single cultural background, conceptual concern, or media can fully define contemporary art of the Heartland. Rather, the works on view reflect a rich web of intersecting perspectives that speak to the complex and sometimes contradictory realities of contemporary Midwestern life. Across all three galleries the work invites each viewer to reflect on what the Heartland means to them personally.

Art Reach: Play

Katharine B. Sutphin Community Gallery

Inspired by games, dreams, memories, movement, and experimentation, students embraced the theme of Play through a wide range of artistic processes and materials. From whimsical watercolor creations and imaginative “dream rooms” inspired by infinite spaces, to oversized game pieces, collaborative surrealist creatures, relief printing with toys, nostalgic character design, ceramics, mixed media, and expressive painting techniques, each artwork reflects the freedom to explore, imagine, and create.

Works by Carol Skinner’s Advanced Painting Classes

This exhibition showcases a collection of paintings created by students in Carol Skinner’s Advanced Painting Classes.

The project began in Fall 2025 with a shared assignment: each artist selected a subject from a list inspired by the beauty, culture, and spirit of Hawaii. Leading the exhibition are portraits of Kai and Akamu, two Native Hawaiians whose images serve as an introduction to the works that follow.
